Leadership

The church described in the Bible is under the spiritual headship of Jesus (Matthew 16:18; Colossians 1:18, 24). In the New Testament, local congregations were served by elders, also called bishops or pastors, who oversee and shepherd the church (1 Peter 5:1–4; Philippians 1:1). Deacons, or servants, are assigned to specific works of service under the leadership of the elders (Acts 6:1–7). There are also those who serve in evangelism by preaching and teaching God’s word (2 Timothy 1:11; 4:5). This is the pattern of organization we find authorized in Scripture, and our desire is to follow it with humility, care, and respect for Christ’s authority over His church (Romans 16:16; 2 Timothy 1:13; Matthew 28:18; John 14:15).
